Foliage Report October 31- On the Coast
The Foliage Report for the final week of October and the start of November shows a medium level of leaf drop along the coast from the NY border of CT to the southeastern most points of New Hampshire. The Cape and Islands still have full trees but damaging winds and rain have caused some loss and are expected to do additional damage to the foliage.
In this final week the best spots for foliage remain along the coast from Greenwich,CT along Route 1 through Westport and Stamford, then New Haven and to Madison, then 1a/Old 1 through Clinton/Westbrook and to Saybrook, near Cornfield Pt and Ft.Saybrooke then along 1 and 156 in Old Lyme and Lyme. Essex 5 minutes inland (exit 3 on rte 9) has shown a greater deal of leaf loss but is still worthy of a trip. South of Gillettes Castle toward the Shore and River viewing is good. Route 1 points just north and all south to the Rhode Island border are excellent. Rhode Island from the Exeter (NW RI) to Providence and Woonsocket, then south to Newport and Narragansett offer nice views. Middletown, RI to Fall River & New Bedford, MA are solidly covered to the Cape and Islands.
Along the Boston shore in the 128 / 93 Area foliage cover is good. North to Rockport and Gloucester and northeast toward Salisbury Beach, MA and Hampton Beach (NH). However from these areas a short drive inland where temps have been lower at night the leaves have fallen off completely in spots.
Rule for the coming week... stick to the coast/shore and the Islands weather permitting!
