REVIEW-NEWPORT ADM.FARRAGUT INN(29)
Our trip to Newport this past summer was based on the need to "get away". We had received some bad news that my father was not doing well in Florida and the stress of it all pushed us to again visit one of our favorite stomping grounds. We had visited Newport in all seasons and for nearly 2o years. Now our number increased from 2 to 3 with the birth of our son. We decided to travel to Newport midweek as it would be easier with our son, easier in regard to getting around, hotels etc... We drove from SE Connecticut to Newport as we do and after a quick stop in Jamestown we headed for Newport. We stopped at the tourist information center in Newport for the first time actually to use the facilities and then find a brochure for places to stay. We used the facilities and was about to ask one of the attendants at the desk for tips on where to stay when I noticed TV screens with available rooms for the night. What a service. My wife and I rifled through the organized brochures and started calling. We always wanted to stay at a B&B/Inn in Newport especially after last years visit when we took the Ghost tour.
We found the Admiral Farragut Inn on Clarke Street. We wanted something very quaint, affordable and central so we did not have to drive anywhere until we left. We called the innkeeper and asked about rates and that we had a almost 2 year old with us. In many places it is nearly impossible to find a place to stay if you have children. The Vineyard, Nantucket and St.Augustine proved to be major tasks in locating a place that "would allow us to stay".
The innkeeped said "come on up first"... I said "that is ok, we will take it..." "no why don't you just come on up and check it out". "Ok... we drove the 3 minutes as they had free local parking. We entered the inn on a quaint cental street located just to the side of the Old Church. The Inn located on Clarke Street was just one of the streets we visited during the Ghost Tour!
The Innkeeper greated us, gave us the room rates for the second time, informed us of breakfast and chatted with our son. The room was located in the top of the old colonial house portion of the Inn. The house dated to 1702 I believe and was the home to French Naval Officers during the latter part of the Revolutionary War. The stairs creaked, the way was narrow and parking, about 10 super SUV's in the lot was a slight challenge by the way. However we checked out the room. Large enough to breathe, Air Conditioning on and that historically re-loved look. The bathroom was spotless, the room itself was filled with standard B&B/Inn "stuff" like grandma's bedspread etc... The room was spotless and smelled of new renovation. We said "yes" and took the room for about 150 bucks a nite and opted for 2 nites.
Located in the center of another historic area of Newport the street was filled with Inn's and was minutes from everything. No noise other than the "ghost" making a thumping sound at 3am one nite...
The next morning we entered the breakfast area. We signed up the night before so that the cook ensures enough seating and food. This was not a problem. We sat at 830 and there was a group from the United Kingdom enjoying breakfast. Like B&Bs everyone said "good morning" and "hello"... and then went about their business. Breakfast, included in the rate was excellent. Homemade eggs, homefries, bagels, toast, fruit and fresh squeezed orange juice we right on the spot. Power for the coming day! we chatted with the Innkeeper and she hinted at lesser known places of interest including a small beach near the State Park that no one uses
The Admiral Farragut Inn was a nice place to stay and left us with nothing else on our wish list. Service was helpful and friendly, the rooms and place was spotless, the guests were even friendly. Breakfast was excellent and the location was as central as it could be. A real charm!
Having made us feel welcome with a small child just summed up our experience of this fine inn and Newport itself which separates this place from the others that we have visited from Florida to the Maine Coast where being "allowed to spend your time with your family in "their" Inn/B&B" was more the norm.
