REVIEW- Noah's Restaurant- Stonington, Conn. (23 out of 25)
Noah's and place of dining for decades in historic Stonington Borough, Stonington, Connecticut was my next stopping place for a blustery January evening. Looking for something a little more upscale to take my mother to we walked back and forth between Noah's and the Water Street Grill down the street. We opted for Noah's as they had a short but interesting menu and the crowd appealed to our want of the evening. Stonington Borough is a hamlet with a history that goes back to the 17th century. The home to Nathaniel Palmer the discoverer of Antartica and a wealthy ship's captain has over the years added new restaurants and shops to go along with the handsome 19th century homes that line the streets.
Noah's housed in an 19th century building with a handsome sign hanging from above the front door has been a local favorite for decades, well since it was a deli many many years back. This type of Chef managed restaurant was just to our taste for the evening.
We entered Noah's through a bar area and were shown to our table by an accommodating hostess. Our drink orders were taken immediately and information on the evening's specials were given immediately. I opted for the Scallops char-grilled with an orange, ginger soy sauce, my mother ordered the salmon with lemon dill butter. For an appetizer Grilled Spiced Colossal Shrimp with Mango Lime Relish and each of us a drink, I took the Cottrell ( a local brewer) and my mother the house wine selection.
Our appetizer arrived quickly and was fresh. Mango Lime relish was outstanding and the shrimp (2) were large and scrumptious. The restaurant was relatively busy with locals and maybe a few out of towners, was warm and smelled delicious. We really enjoyed the atmosphere and the artwork on the walls.
The main courses arrived and were very well presented. Scallops each resting on it's own little section of the plate with a nice "drizzle" of sauce across them. The salmon was a decent portion and the butter not too much to steal the flavor. The waitress checked with us several times to ensure that all was well and it was.
Scallops were fresh and likely from the local fisherman (Stonington Scallops) and the salmon fresh cut at its best. The mashed potato or "vegetable and starch" was outstanding...a hint of cream and cheese... worth ordering by itself. In the end we were too full for desert but opted for coffee which was freshly brewed and very very good, more of the kind offered from a fine espresso machine than that of a Mr.Coffee.
I would write more on Noah's but I had not yet gotten over how much I enjoyed this evening, the food, the atmosphere and the company - All made for a great evening!
