REVIEW- DAYS INN - Old Saybrook, Conn. (14 out of 30)
REVIEW- DAYS INN- Boston Post Road- Old Saybrook, Conn. (14 out of 25)
When one reads of reviews from this and that and usually of finer more quaint places to rest. Well knowing that in along the New England Coast there are either expensive high end inns, hotels and other or low end-should be but still moderately priced or even expensive it was time to check out the Days Inn in Old Saybrook. I had driven by this hotel many times and finally opted after a long day in New Haven sampling the likes of Pepe's Pizza to stay over in Old Saybrook. The Days Inn I had passed by several times that week in January and from the outside it appeared to be a standard early 80s hotel but being in Saybrook it must be ok - especially since it was not "right off the highway".
I arrived around 6pm and was greeted by... no one. The parking lot was virtually empty signalling this was offseason or this was going to be well... a long and interesting night. I was eventually greeted by the smell of fresh paint and a friendly front desk attendant. Room prices were about 80 dollars a night for one person. I said yes... then he sweetened the offer... a jacuzzi in room for just 149 well with a 20 dollar discount I said "ok" my bones are aching. I grabbed the key and wandered to the back of the hotel where the jacuzzi suite was. Half the hotel was being renovated and this was a good sign.
The room large and open smelled tired and unused for some time. The decor of course the kind you would not steal to take home. The bed made of what felt like concrete board was large and rooomie. The TV was dated... enough said. The jacuzzi appeared "ok" but in need of refreshening. Large and roomie as well the area around the jacuzzi was very wet as something was leaking.
I filled the jacuzzi and after a while enjoyed about 30 mins in it. After about 20 mins I said to myself..."what did I waste my money on now?"... 10 more mins passed and I left the jacuzzi never to return.
My night which included a stop at Penny Lane Pub and the local but dated Walmart ended in an ok sleep night. I awoke with the feeling of ..."lets get the heck out of dodge" and I did. I was greeted by a man, likely the hotel owner and he told me of the breakfast that was included. Standard fare bagel, jelly, coffee... I said thanks but wanted to enjoy the nice weather outside. He informed me that they had just finished renovating the entry and were attacking the 3rd floor. Friendly man and a hotel with some hope.
In the end... I left thinking..."I just spent 140 bucks at a Days Inn"...
With this in mind and I will give them a second shot when the renovations are finalized to be fare but based on this stay...
