Review-Penny Lane Pub (23 out of 25)

I finally had the chance to check out Penny Lane Pub in Old Saybrook, Conn. this past January. Having gone by it dozens of times and having read reviews of it several more times I decided to check it out! On this particular evening, a Friday as matter of fact, I along with two friends who were so surprisingly given the "brush off" by the hostess at the neighboring Liv's Oyster Bar walked in and were greated by "What can I get you?" and a nice smile.

The restaurant for mid winter was basically full and smelled of garlic based creations! We opted for seats at the bar where we engaged locals, well sort of... out of towners who had move to Old Saybrook. The bar handsomely decorated and maintained like a modern version of an old English Pub was spit shined. Waiters rushing by with snacks and full course meals.

The bar menu was standard with the exception of a nice selection of micro brews and imports. I opted of for the Sam Adams Winter Lager which came in an ice cold glass, my friends ordered a martini in a fine martini glass and a Red Hook I believe. We ordered various snack foods including the nachos. They arrived piled high, with lots of cheese, meat and other. A little light on the salsa but hot and fresh. We were asked on several occassions by the busy bartender if we needed anything else and we did not, but it was wonderful to sample good and friendly service after our "Liv's Experience".

The Pub Steak Salad loaded with crumbly gorgonzola was fantastic! A nice portion and not too much! Perfect to enjoy the flavors! The Lamb salad also ordered was very tasty I was told by my friend but by the likes of it she loved it... never offered a sample until she neared the end.

All in a nice time and one that we look forward to returning to!
