Foliage Report October 24

Foliage Report for October 24, 2007

We just returned from a nice 11 day sojourn in New England and well I can tell you that Central and Southern New England are just about at peak now. The peak time in this area was delayed due to an extra week of 70 degree temps that ran from Fairfield County in Connecticut North to Southern New Hampshire and Vermont. A few cold nights and some much needed (aaah) rain  has helped the colors turn (as well as the earlier by the day sunsets) finally into those brilliant colors many have known New England to have.

Although receiving about 60% of the normal rainful and reports of a less than spectacular foliage season have been written in newspaper after newspaper I can tell you first hand that this is only, at best, partially true. There are some green leaves, some brown on the ground already but the colors are as spectacular as ever. With bright sunny days and wonderful cool early evenings the "peeping" is great!

While in Southern New England I would suggest the following routes (in addition to those mentioned already) for some great viewing.

Route 138 through Western Rhode Island
Route 44 from Lakeville,CT through to Western Rhode Island
Route 1 from Guilford through to East Lyme and Western Waterford
Route 1 from Mystic, CT to Westerly, RI
Route 3 from South Boston/Quincy to the Cape (many evergreens but nice anyway)
Nantucket (downtown)
91 North / South from Mass-VT border to Hartford
Route 9 from Old Saybrook through Cromwell, CT
Route 7 from Canaan, CT through the Berkshires of Western, MA to North Adams, MA.

Although these are major roadways the driving is most enjoyable.

Come on back soon to www.thenewenglandcoast.com as we have some new reviews and pics to share with everyone!
