Old Saybrook, Conn. - Restaurant Happenings
Old Saybrook, Conn. is a little more than sleepy shore town on the coast of Connecticut. Old Saybrook is dotted with historic homes, a handsome main street and lots of history.
In the past few years Old Saybrook has become a leader in transforming the cuisine of the Southeastern corner of Connecticut with Penny Lane, Terra Mar & Jacks Grill dotting the landscape offering unique foods to a discerning year round crow many with career routes in Hartford and New Haven as well as those with roots in New York and elsewhere.
In the past few years the transformation of one staple The Saybrook Fish House under the stewardship of former NBA All-Star and Olympian as well as local hero Vin Baker, from a traditional dark New England seafood house with great Bouillabaisse to a dynamic restaurant with handsome interior, fresh fruits of the sea like oysters from Norwalk and clams from Rhode Island Vinnie's Fish House became a favorite of locals and summer residents alike. Prices steep but worthy of the fare Vinnie appeared to be running a business that would become a mainstay for generations until recently...owing money to it's lender and more Vinnie's Fish House closed its doors leaving a great hole in the Southeastern Connecticut dining scape. We can only hope someone else will pick up the pieces and bring back to life this handsome restaurant.
New to Saybrook is Aspen a bistro on Main Street in Old Saybrook. Although I have yet to sample their menu the entire concept is appealing. Warm colors, inventive desserts and main course and a handsome wine list may make Old Saybrook even a greater little spot to dine.
Saybrook Country Barn has been rumored to be opening a "tavern" style restaurant but to date nothing has been mentioned. Pat's Kountry Kitchen a mainstay for dinners and breakfasts continue to create filling meals and is always busy.
The Southeastern corner of Connecticut has missed, until recently someone with the courage to create something more like that found in New York or Boston. Eclectic, different, tasty and not what everyone else has. I for one am looking forward to checking out Aspen in Old Saybrook, Conn.
