Review: Chester's BBQ (15 of 25)
Chester's BBQ is located on Bank Street in downtown New London, CT in a small sandwiched building that one can drive right by without giving much notice. For those on foot this section of Bank Street is just to the west of the main drag and is a small brick building at 549 Bank Street.
In business for about 15 months I am told Chester's offers everything bbq'd. On this fine day I decided to sample Chester's BBQ. Good BBQ is usually found not in your backyard but in the deep south and in the lower midwest. To this day the best I have ever had was at Rib Fest in St.Petersburg, FL. some 15 years ago from a Kansas City based outfit.
Ok bbq is heavy food and if not hungry the simple whiff of bbq food is enough to make you, well hungry!
I entered Chester's BBQ late one afternoon, noted that it is one of the few places open in downtown New London on a Sunday afternoon. Greeted by a friendly bbq master I looked at the "blackboard" specials which were essentially 1/4 chicken and pulled chicked and pork with and without sides ranging in price from about 6 bucks.
I tried the Carolina Chicken, sweet potato mash and cole slaw. Tempted by Deep River Chips from nearby Old Lyme I passed.
The food came quickly and the chicken was in chunks at room temperature nestled between two texas slices (large and thick) of white bread. The sides in small containers were warm and relatively fresh.
The interior was a bit "post lunch rush" look and the windows were well a bit greasy... Primarily a sit down place there are a few tables to sit down on to watch the cars fly past on Bank Street.
The sides were tasty the best of the two was the sweet potato mash. The slaw was a bit bland lacking some lemon or pepper but was fresh.
The sandwich consisted of a large amount of chunked chicken with the odd bone which means fresh and not processed! The Carolina sauce was a bit on the sour side and did not dominate the sandwich like so many other bbq places. Without writing more...the total cost with 1 soda, 2 sides and a sandwich was only 9.00! A good value and most filling.
My thoughts:
Inexpensive, good tasting food. The atmosphere was lacking a bit as the non-cleared tables and greasy windows took a bit away from the experience but all in all worth a return visit.
