REVIEW: VooDoo Grill - Mystic, Conn. (15 out of 25)
Voo Doo Grill offers a sports bar atmosphere moreso than a Louisiana Kitchen but is lively and filled with 50% tourist and 50% local/regionals. The menu consists of everything from burgers to Etouffe, 2 kinds of Jumbalaya, Catfish wraps and more. The beer selection is well on paper handsome but what you get, at least on my recent trip was somewhat less.
We entered on a Friday evening without reservations... who needs reservations for a sports bar
As we sat we we were greeted by "what can I get ya?"... Well Sam Adams Lager... "we don't have any..." well other choices... on the menu were several types and several types of local variety beers..."don't have those either..." "So you are out of ALL Sam Adams products...?" I asked... the response was "yeah".... and a half "arsed" smile. Ok I ordered a local beer which they did have.
For dinner I ordered the Seafood Jumbalaya and my guest the Catfish Wrap. In a few minutes, perhaps 5 our meals were served, or should I say "thrown on the table"... I guess you can see where we are going with this ...
My portion was "HUUUUUGE" with more than 2 pounds of rice, a healthy portion of seafood (shrimp and other) and the andouille sausage was tasty and lots of it. The catfish wrap was small and light on everything. However my meal made up for it. I picked through the obviously pre-made (in the morning) meal which for some reason came with a pickle and ate the seafood and sausage not wanting to fill up on the rice. All in a very tasty meal for under 20 bucks!
We opted not to eat anything sweet in order to allow us a walk in the fresh air to clear our lungs of the Chinese Fried "whiff" we had before entering the Voo Doo Grill. Our bill came and was under 40.00 tax, tip and drinks. Not too bad...
My thoughts and www.thenewenglandcoast.com says:
Decent Prices, Some HUUUGE portions, good tasting food. The atmosphere was envigorating and almost energetic, the service was average or the type you expect from a tourist trap. Other than the "service" and feeling of being a tourist in my own region I would go back for some snack food but not as on a "dinner date".

I'm a local and have been to Voodoo many times, I don't look at it as a tourist's trap at all.
