REVIEW: Mangetout - New London, Conn. (19 out of 25)

Decorated in a French farmhouse style mangetout offers a menu of organic / fresh foods to the growing appetite of New Londoners who are looking for alternative foods. Add Mangetout to the new Treehugger organic salon at the New London Markets building and Bean & Leaf in the same building then throw in the growing Fiddleheads movement and soon to open New London location and New London seems to be evolving into a fresh food and fresh ideas center.

When I entered Mangetout on a sunny midweek afternoon day they had just opened for lunch. I entered the restaurant and was greeted by a friendly host. I took the seat nearest to the window as I like to watch people and also say "hey something is happening here in this restaurant... come on in...". The menus are located on a chalkboard as well as outside and on their website at http://www.mangetoutorganic.com/ and feature organic everything. Sandwiches are nice mixes of fresh greens and some meats (chicken) somewhat touching on the "bistro" side or more inventive which is a dose of medicine that SE CT sorely needs.

On the day I was there... a honey mustard chicken sandwich with carrot strips and fresh greens was on the menu, the dessert tray with muffins and cookies of all sorts was very inviting and almost made me wish that my sandwich was already eaten so I could test the desserts.

Not having "mass market" brands of soda / beverage I ordered the Blue Sky Ginger Ale which was relatively tasty. The sandwich arrived on a plate with a pickle which was relatively fresh, the sandwich on a nice roll was fresh, the carrots as though picked yesterday made a crunching sound when they were bitten. The chicken breast was sweet and cooked just enough and after a 10 minute eating session I was finished, pleased and ready to try some dessert.

I ordered a cookie made of oatmeal, and more ... I was pleased. The peanut butter cookie was a bit dry but excellent with a cup of java that I ordered from another establishment later that day. Great for dunking.

The dessert menu had everything from muffins to cakes including a riccotta cake that sounded great for after dinner or just a drop by to quench that sweet tooth. Open for lunch and later on the weekends for dinner Mangetout is an interesting and healthy addition to the downtown New London dining scene. Time will tell if the organic center grows in New London and if Mangetout can weather the stormy New London restaurant scene... but for one I hope so!

My thoughts and www.thenewenglandcoast.com says:

Nice Prices, good & fresh tasting food. The atmosphere was most relaxing and well thought out. the service was friendly and most tenative and personal. I will head back for a sampling of their dinner fare and would happily stop by for a cup of organic fair trade coffee and a cookie and pastry on a regular day.
