With the loss of the old Ocean House built around the time of the Civil War in scenic, tony and historic Watch Hill, Rhode Island where mansions elbow each other not as in McMansions side by side but expanded property line by expanded property line the Ocean House was one of the last vestages of the mid 19th century grand hotels left on the East Coast and this time lost to the wrecking ball not by hungry developers for more "McMansions" but out of necessity and danger. The Ocean House was close to collapsing into the sand and in fact the upper and outer floors were long closed off for guests.

The New Ocean House will be complete within about a years time and will offer guest rooms (hotel) as well as luxury residences (long since sold) to those longing for the Grand Old Style of living now since replaced by mass market hotel chains and boutique chic hotels. With a hotel bar and restaurant as well as fitness center / spa the New Ocean House will feature 21st century amenities and 19th century architecture. All in one....

as the building is close to enclosure why take a drive by with gas prices falling back to their "normal level" a simple half day trip in the winter can be pleasing to a small resort community like Watch Hill and nearby Westerly, Rhode Island. Drive around, park and walk. Grab a cup of cocoa and or coffee and enjoy a half day! It is for the mind and body to help battle the winter depression.

Drive Interstate 95 from points south (Connecticut) and head off at Allyn Street (Mystic). Head through downtown Mystic and follow Route 1 along the coast to Westerly where you will pick up Scenic 1a and follow to Watch Hill. Many restaurants and cafes are open in Westerly and neighboring Pawcatuck, CT as well.
