REVIEW: Hingham Lobster Pound
Sandwich, MA just to the southern side of the Bourne Bridge and the target being the Quince Tree House where we would stay one evening. While enroute to Sandwich we opted to follow the shore route through Quincy and then through rural but busy Hingham,MA. We were greeted by smart and cute salt box capes, garden stands and a few restaurants. As we veered nearer to the waterfront we drove by the Hingham Lobster Pound and made an immediate and almost dangerous turn into a dirt weed overgrown parking lot. We thought..."umm... lobster rolls". As we entered the "pound" we were greeted by other first timers (first time customers) and dozens of magazine and newspaper write-ups on the greatness of their fried clams. To the side of some of the articles were pictures and postcards of Hingham's pround beach past.
Asking the dumbest question possible... and not trusting a sign and a write up I asked a friendly server "do you have whole belly clams.." the answer with a half smile was "yes we do..." We ordered lobster rolls and a pint of whole bellys. They came in a brown school lunch bag. The lobster rolls came wrapped in paper. A friendly local told us of a beach with picnic tables down the street about a mile where we could enjoy our meal.
We did just that...
Lobster Roll- to be honest was less than exciting... if not boring. Damp as in "write out of the freezer" with a dollop of mayonaise abd well some celery and lettuce. Before going on...as a Connecticut Yankee I think "hot dog bun, melted butter and chunk lobster meat"-nuff said.
The clams were still hot, batter dipped and quite large. They melted in our mouthes... quite possibly the best clams (as mentioned also in many of the articles on their wall) I have ever had. Priced at about 15 bucks they were more than worth it. If not for a wonderful farmers market in the park's parking lot we would have driven back to buy another order of clams. One should give this review in two parts.... Needless to say... this is a DEFINITE STOP for anyone driving through Hingham in the summer.
